Who Runs This
The Gable Bench started in 2013 because we noticed something simple: the best contractors in town were invisible online, while generic marketing promises filled the search results. We're local business owners ourselves, which means we've made the same hiring mistakes you're trying to avoid. We've sat in on bad estimates, discovered work that looked perfect until winter hit, and learned to spot the difference between a good website and actually good work. This site exists to share what we've learned.
The best recommendations come from people who know the difference between good work and good marketing.
We don't collect commissions, accept payments, or let anyone buy their way onto this site. We write about the businesses we've personally hired and the contractors whose work actually holds up. That's the only qualification that matters.
How We Evaluate
We don't use algorithms or star ratings. We watch what happens when we hire someone and whether it matches what they promised. We ask hard questions and follow up months later. Here's what we actually look for:
We know their work firsthand
Before we recommend anyone, we've hired them ourselves or we know someone whose judgment we trust deeply. We're not collecting reviews from strangers on the internet. We're drawing from our own network and our own experience with these people.
We check the detail work
A contractor can take a nice photograph, but what matters is what happens three years later. Does the siding still look right? Do the gutters still drain? Is the roof shedding water like it should? We look for contractors who think about the long term, who sweat the details, and who know that good work is invisible because it doesn't fail.
We ask what they'd do differently
No one gets everything right on the first try. We ask contractors what they've learned, what they wish they'd known, and where they draw the line on cutting corners. The honest answer tells you more than any testimonial.
Why It Exists
This site started because we were tired of hiring based on hunches and internet hopes. We're a small town and we talk — word-of-mouth is how things actually work here. The Gable Bench simply writes down those conversations so people outside our immediate circle can benefit from what we've learned.
We're not selling anything and we don't take commissions. We just point people toward the businesses and services we've actually found trustworthy. If you're looking for good work in a service business, you should have access to that honest opinion without having to know someone local first.
Something We Changed Our Mind About
When we started, we thought good work spoke for itself. We've learned that's not quite true. People need permission to hire someone who isn't a household name. They need to hear from someone they trust that it's safe to try someone new. That's what we're here for now.
